The most artistic house in the world!

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

Built in Turku, Finland for artist Jan-Erik Andersson’s Doctorate in Fine Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki, the Life on a Leaf house has been described as unique.

“The form of the Leaf House is unique. By day it resembles a strange hat or misshapen boat; by night a Jack O’ Lantern, glowing from within, its windows evoking the abstracted eyes and mouth of some Finnish folklore giant. Though the structure appears quirky and follyesque – modernism goes Moomin – it is far from haphazard.”

Viva-Lite partners Ad-Lux were responsible for the full-spectrum lights throughout the house and reported from the opening party that under the Viva Lite lamps the colors of the house are real and beautiful.

You can watch a video of the house here.

Do iPads Cause Insomnia?

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

A recent (Dec 2010) article in the Epoch Times explores the relationship between light hygiene and a good nights sleep.  The article is educational reading for all those interested in how our bodies respond to light.

“Our environment is increasingly impacting our health, separating us from the natural forces that interact with our physiology to keep us well. The most pervasive forces are light and darkness. The lights we use or are exposed to at night cause the greatest disruption. (more…)

Better Lighting For Your Computer

Monday, June 7th, 2010

Ever notice how people texting at night have that eerie blue glow? Or wake up ready to write down the Next Great Idea, and get blinded by your computer screen?

During the day, computer screens look good—they’re designed to look like the sun. But, at 9PM, 10PM, or 3AM, you probably shouldn’t be looking at the sun. This little software tool called “F.lux” is all you need to change it. It makes the color of your computer’s display adapt to the time of day, warm at night and like sunlight during the day. A review towards hybrid lighting systems

New Engineering Building

Image via Wikipedia

This paper reviews developments in hybrid light guidance systems.

In these daylight and electric light are simultaneously delivered into a building where they are combined and distributed via luminaires. The technology used in hybrid systems, both conceptual and realised, is discussed. The review speculates as to their likely performance in terms of daylight delivery; capital and running costs; user reaction to the systems; potential impact of the systems on the building which they light; and suitable design methods. It is noted that a substantial amount of work remains before the potential of hybrid systems may be realised, notably on their long-term economics and feasibility in different geographic locations. New Year Amaryllis – Happy And Alive!

Friday, January 1st, 2010

First of all we wish all our customers, homepage visitors and business partners a healthy and successful Happy New Year!

To celebrate this, we’d like to share a story with you from a client in the Netherlands: He is a specialist for rare plants and grows (among others) a special type of amaryllis from South Africa. Now after he was away for some travels and without proper lighting as usual, on his return the plant seemed to have died off and the leafs already showed an unhealthy yellow colour.

Even though he thought it was too late, he felt to give Viva-Lite a go and installed 2×80W Viva-Lite Full Spectrum tubes just to find that after only 3 days of being lit with Viva-Lite, his amaryllis came back to perfect condition adding “this result is absolutely amazing”:

Since then we had many enquiries and lot of feedback from people who use Viva-Lite for their plants and animals alike (e.g. fish, aquarium etc.), many with similar stories.

We thought of sharing this good news with you at the beginning of the New Year.
